What to expect

Preparation for a Colonoscopy

Please ensure that you follow these instructions carefully. Non-compliance may lead to poor quality results and/or cancellation of your colonoscopy.

Colonoscopy Preparation Instructions

Before Your Procedure:

Medications:

If you take daily Aspirin, vitamins, or minerals, stop taking them 5 days before your procedure unless otherwise instructed by your physician.  Follow your physician's directions regarding other medications.

Diet:

Follow a clear liquid diet the day before your procedure. This includes:

Water

Clear broth or bouillon

Clear fruit juices without pulp (apple, white grape)

Plain gelatin

Tea or coffee without milk or creamer

Sports drinks (Gatorade, Powerade)

Avoid red or purple-colored liquids.

Do not consume any solid foods or dairy products.

Bowel Preparation:

Your physician will prescribe a bowel preparation solution (e.g., Pico Salax, PegLyte). Follow the instructions provided with the solution for mixing and consumption.

Begin drinking the bowel preparation solution as directed. It is essential to complete the entire solution to ensure a clean colon for the procedure.

Clothing and Personal Items:

Wear loose, comfortable clothing and flat shoes to your appointment.

Remove all nail polish and avoid using hand cream. At least one nail must be polish-free.

Day of Procedure:

Arrive at the clinic at least 30 minutes before your scheduled appointment time.

Bring your Ontario Health Insurance Card and a list of your current medications (if applicable).

If you do not speak English, bring a family member or friend to assist with translation.

During Your Procedure:

Procedure Duration:

The colonoscopy procedure typically takes 15-30 minutes.

Your total time at the clinic will be approximately 2-3 hours, including preparation and recovery.

After Your Procedure:

You will spend some time in the recovery area until the effects of sedation wear off.

A friend or family member must meet you inside the centre to drive you home. If you received sedation, you cannot drive or take public transit alone for 24 hours.

Follow any post-procedure instructions provided by your physician.

All patients must be accompanied and will require a ride home after the procedure, regardless of whether sedation is used.

Cancellation Policy: We require three (3) business days’ notice to cancel or reschedule your appointment. Failure to do so will result in a $90.00 charge.
